TWO HOURS ago, watching Dorian wobble around on his skates and look the most ungraceful he’s ever seen him, Eric would have put money on the fall count being at least five. And that’s him being generous and presuming he’d be able to catch him most of the time. He’d have lost his money. Dorian only falls four times—wiping Eric out with him one of those times. It took him the first hour to gain his confidence on the thin blades, but by the second hour he was determined to learn and asking Eric questions about technique rather than trying to distract him.

Not that he isn’t a distraction whether he is trying or not. Dorian looks gorgeous all flushed and sweaty, his hair curling around his face, his eyes fierce and focused as he tries again and again to get it right. It feels right to share this with him, and pride bubbles in his chest at the determination Dorian shows to learn. Dorian gets up after every fall, dusting ice flakes from his clothes and ignoring what has to be bumps and bruises.

As they’re making their way back to the car, Dorian’s favoring his left shoulder. It took a rather hard blow when he went skates over head onto the ice while trying to pick up speed. Eric’s just grateful Dorian didn’t crack his head. His heart had stopped for a moment seeing Dorian fall like that. He’d offered to end the lesson for the day right then—planning to bring a helmet for the next time they did this—but Dorian had insisted on continuing. He’d overcome his fear of the ice spectacularly.

When they’re in the car, Eric in the driver seat this time, he rests his hand on Dorian’s thigh. “How about I give you a massage when we get home?”

Dorian looks exhausted, head against the seat and eyes closed, his lips slightly parted. He cracks one of his blue eyes open to squint at him. “If that’s code for sex, I’m honestly too tired.”

Eric tries to look affronted rather than amused. He squeezes where he’s been absently rubbing Dorian’s leg. The muscles beneath his hand are tense. He can feel that even through the skinny jeans. “It’s not code for anything. Your muscles aren’t used to the workout you just gave them, and you’re kind of stiff. I want you to be able to move tomorrow without feeling like you got run over.”

“Oh. Well in that case, massage away.” Dorian closes his eyes, and he’s snoring by the time Eric leaves the parking lot. If Eric had known Dorian had this planned, he’d have let him sleep a little more last night. And he’d have been a little gentler. He’s having a hard time feeling guilty, though, considering Dorian’s enthusiastic encouragement of everything…. He shakes his head. These are not the thoughts to be having while he’s trying to navigate New York City.

There’s a couple of wrong turns, and a few people honk meanly at him when he takes too long looking at Google Maps on his phone.
